The Object

This Mini-Cho-chin is a hybrid: a plastic frame with paper surfaces. The color is a fluorescent neon green. On the surface, two names are printed: “Issie” and “Greenpia Ibusuki.” At the time of purchase, I knew “Issie” was the monster that lived in the depths, but the second name meant nothing to me. It was just a word on a piece of plastic.

The Setting

Lake Ikeda is a volcanic caldera. It is silent. Along the shore, vines thread through the shattered glass of a vacant restaurant. Nearby, giant statues of the monster stand in the weeds. Their fiberglass skin is peeling in the heat, exposing a dead gray underneath. The statues are too large for the silence. The parking lots are oversized and empty.

The Acquisition

I found this lantern on a sun-bleached shelf in a shop near the lake. Among the faded souvenirs, this green was the only thing that had not surrendered to the sun.
The small bell attached to it is rusted. When I flicked it, it did not ring. It made a dry “click”—the sound of cheap plastic hitting rusted metal. I flicked it again. Then once more. I could not remember why I wanted to hear it.

The Observation

I later learned “Greenpia” was a dream of a national resort that collapsed into billions of yen of debt. My memory of the 1,500km drive is now a blur of fatigue. My hair has turned white. But the lantern remains. It sits in the dark and refuses to fade, indifferent to the three decades that have passed.

The Residue

I keep this fragment in my dark storage. There are other objects there, but this one never recedes. When I turn off the light, its shape remains—a neon stain that does not belong to the dark. The click of the rusted bell. The unknown name. The green.
